How would you like to be remembered?

Author: Anupam Dey /

About a hundred years ago, a man looked at the morning newspaper and to his surprise and horror, read his name in the obituary column. The newspapers had reported the death of the wrong person by mistake. His first response was shock. Am I here or there? When he regained his composure, his second thought was to find out what people had said about him. The obituary read, "Dynamite King Dies." And also "He was the merchant of death." This man was the inventor of dynamite and when he read the words "merchant of death," he asked himself a question, "Is this how I am going to be remembered?" He got in touch with his feelings and decided that this was not the way he wanted to be remembered. From that day on, he started working toward peace.

His name was Alfred Nobel and he is remembered today by the great Nobel Prize.

Just as Alfred Nobel got in touch with his feelings and redefined his values, we should step back and do the same.

What is your legacy? How would you like to be remembered?

Will you be spoken well of? Will you be remembered with love and respect? Will you be missed??

Advice from a Pencil Maker

Author: Anupam Dey /

The Pencil Maker took the pencil aside, just before putting him into the box.

“There are 5 things you need to know,” he told the pencil, “Before I send you out into the world.
Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best pencil you can be.”

One: “You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in someone’s hand.”
Two: “You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you’ll need it to become a better pencil.”
Three: “You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.”
Four: “The most important part of you will always be what's inside.”
And Five: “On every surface you are used on, you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write.”
The pencil understood and promised to remember, and went into the box with purpose in its heart.

Now replacing the place of the pencil with you. Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best person you can be.
One: “You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in God’s hand. And allow other human beings to access you for the many gifts you possess.”
Two: “You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, by going through various
problems in life, but you’ll need it to become a stronger person.”
Three: “You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.”
Four: “The most important part of you will always be what’s on the inside.”
And Five: “On every surface you walk through, you must leave your mark. No matter what the situation, you must continue to do your duties.”

Allow this parable on the pencil to encourage you to know that you are a special person and only you can fulfill the purpose to which you were born to accomplish.Never allow yourself to get discouraged and think that your life is insignificant and cannot make a change.

Work Smart, Don't Work Hard

Author: Anupam Dey /

Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter asked for a job with a timber merchant, and he got it. His salary was really good and so were the working conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best.

His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to fell the trees. The first day, the woodcutter brought down 15 trees.
"Congratulations," the boss said. "Carry on with your work!"
Highly motivated by the words of his boss, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he only could bring 10 trees down. The third day he tried even harder, but he was only able to bring down 7 trees. Day after day he was bringing lesser number of trees down.

"I must be losing my strength", the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on.
"When was the last time you sharpened your axe?" the boss asked.
"Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees..."

Moral of the story is;

Most of us NEVER update our skills. We think that whatever we have learned is very much enough. But good is not good when better is expected. Sharpening our skills from time to time is the key to success.

What is love?

Author: Anupam Dey /

A student asks a teacher, "What is love?"
The teacher said, "in order to answer your question, go to the wheat field and choose the biggest wheat and come back.
But the rule is: you can go through them only once and cannot turn back to pick."
The student went to the field, go thru first row, he saw one big wheat, but he wonders....may be there is a bigger one later.
Then he saw another bigger one... but may be there is an even bigger one waiting for him.
Later, when he finished more than half of the wheat field, he starts to realise that the wheat is not as big as the previous one he saw, he knew he has missed the biggest one, and he regretted.
So, he ended up went back to the teacher with empty hand.

The teacher told him, "...this is love... you keep looking for better ones, but when later you realise, you have already missed the person.

Lets change our vision.....

There was a millionaire who was bothered by severe eye pain. He consulted so many physicians and was getting his treatment done. He did not stop consulting galaxy of medical experts; he consumed heavy loads of drugs and underwent hundreds of injections.

But the ache persisted with great vigour than before. At last a monk who has supposed to be an expert in treating such patients was called for by the millionaire. The monk understood his problem and said that for sometime he should concentrate only on green colours and not to fall his eyes on any other colours.

The millionaire got together a group of painters and purchased barrels of green color and directed that every object his eye was likely to fall to be painted in green colour just as the monk had directed.

When the monk came to visit him after few days, the millionaire's servants ran with buckets of green paints and poured on him since he was in red dress, lest their master not see any other colour and his eye ache would come back.

Hearing this monk laughed said "If only you had purchased a pair of green spectacles, worth just a few rupees, you could have saved these walls and trees and pots and all other articles and also could have saved a large share of his fortune.

You cannot paint the world green." Let us change our vision and the world will appear accordingly. It is foolish to shape the world, let us shape ourselves first.

Lets change our vision..!!

There won't always be tomorrow

Author: Anupam Dey /

There won't always be tomorrow ... to tell someone you care,
There won't always be tomorrow ... when you can just be there,
Do not leave unsaid ... words that may ease some strife,
Do not leave undone ... things that may change a life,
Waiting until tomorrow ... is just not good enough,
Do today what must be done ... get up off your duff,
Tomorrow is not promised ... you may not even have today,
Tell people that you love them ... right now while you may,
Hold a hand, share a laugh ... there's so much you can do,
Give a hug, play a game ... realize they love you,
Tomorrow is not promised ... so today is gold,
You may not have another chance ... to have and to hold,
Say out loud those kind things ... you would wish you'd said,
Tell people that you love them ... before you go to bed,
Reach out and hold a hand ... you may bring some light,
Into someone's loneliness ... bring brightness to their night,
Tomorrow may never come ... but you have today,
To spend some time with loved ones ... together you can pray,
Do not leave regrets ... live your life to the max,
On many peoples lives ... make sure you leave your tracks,
For you have this time, this day, this very hour.
Do what you must do ... do all within your power
To mend broken bridges ... to say "I love you" ...
To rekindle friendships ... even to start anew.
There won't always be tomorrow when you can just be there,
There won't always be tomorrow ... so tell someone today you care.

Redefinition

Author: Anupam Dey /

Once "blind" meant "having no eyes",
Now time demands a redefinition
For now those with eyes have become sightless
They see without seeing, the tears that go untouched

Once "Deaf" meant "having no ears"
Now time demands a redefinition
For today those with ears cant hear
The agonized pleas, the sorrowed cries

Once "Dumb" was "one who could not speak"
Now time demands a redefinition
For those with tongues keep shut their mouths
When the innocents plead for justice

Once "Mad" meant to "Lack senses"
Now time demands a redefinition
For those honouring their brains have turned lunatic
They destroy without caring, they cause pain without guilt

Yes! Time has changed it all
The purity of conscience has defiled
The intensity of emotions has burnt out
In the race for world, title and money
Man has become a stranger to himself

Yes! In his veil of illusion of normalcy
Man deludes in false assurances
his "Supremacy" has been erased by brutality
he now lives as the worst animal

Caught in a disease, unknown
he gradually proceeds towards destruction

But! In this long changed world
The sun still rises and illuminates the dark
Yet! a bud blooms to flower
Unaware of the gloom, the birds still sing
The cool breeze blows to refreshen!

.....And yet! In the souls of many
         ......Hope still lives...
